I didn't think I'd be this sad.

Failing and Flying, Jack Gilbert

just a poem by Jack Gilbert I like:

Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew.
It's the same when love comes to an end,
or the marriage fails and people say
they knew it was a mistake, that everybody
said it would never work. That she was
old enough to know better. But anything
worth doing is worth doing badly.
Like being there by that summer ocean
on the other side of the island while
love was fading out of her, the stars
burning so extravagantly those nights that
anyone could tell you they would never last.
Every morning she was asleep in my bed
like a visitation, the gentleness in her
like antelope standing in the dawn mist.
Each afternoon I watched her coming back
through the hot stony field after swimming,
the sea light behind her and the huge sky
on the other side of that. Listened to her
while we ate lunch. How can they say
the marriage failed? Like the people who
came back from Provence (when it was Provence)
and said it was pretty but the food was greasy.
I believe Icarus was not failing as he fell,
but just coming to the end of his triumph.

The Best Things

The best things in life aren't things

One more day down
Everybody has those days
Where one soft sweet song's
Just enough to clear my head

One more year down, and 08 is already rolling along. I don't really have too much interest in creating some year in review post. It was a completely average year with some nice highs and some down in the dirt lows. I hope to become more capable of a move in this coming year, both physically and in the job realm. January will see me get my resumé in order as well as going back to school. I'm just dipping my big toe in right now, one class through UC Extension. I start tonight and will go for the next 12 weeks. It's only once a week, but for four hours. Uggg... I guess this is how grown up working people do it. I was able to get work to pay for the whole thing, so..... so far so good? Time to get my learn on.

So one more day down
And everybody's changin'
One soft sweet sound
Is just enough to clear my head

Nice and Easy

When a woman says
she wants to take it slow
she means she wants to
take it easy

When a man says
he wants to take it slow
he means
let's have sex

And so it works
until the man realizes
he likes taking it slow
but she's still taking it easy

Nice and easy
